Dal Locke's report:
Today was a solo ride because I just headed out for a quick ride down the Katy trail.
It was an absolutely gorgeous day with temps in the 70's. I noticed nobody was out
today and finally realized that today was the last day of the grand old Texas State
Fair. A light bulb went off in my head so I hooked it over to the fair grounds right
away.
I rode around the outside perimeter of the fair and got a whiff of the food and
especially the corny dogs. I locked up the bike next to the north entrance and went
inside. $15 to get in and the beers and corny dogs were $4. I had a couple of both
and walked around. Later I even had one of those nutty ice cream bars. Mmm,
mmm, mmm. Did not try the fried butter becasue the line was too long for that.
Probably saved me a coronary heart attack anyway. It was very crowded but I was
able to walk around the whole thing. Been there many, many time before but this
year was my first year to ride the Gondola. When I was a kid they had the old style
gondola ride but it had an issue with dropping cars occasionally and killing people.
This one is modern and was very nice. The view from there was spectacular. Lots of
people and rides. Some of the rides looked very scary and seemed like they would
kill an older person such as myself. Watched the BMX show as the skyriders
screamed by and vomited on the crowd. Missed me, thank goodness.
I strolled through the automobile building looking for electric vehicles. Only hybrids to
be found. Looked under the hood at several hybrids and noticed the large orange
wire bundles. One guy said he had to replace the battery pack in a Prius and it set
him back $7k. Ouch. I think I'll wait untill the LiFePo4 batteries are in those puppies.
Headed over to the Chevy main stage where Obama's General Motors sponsored a
concert by the Commodores. That was a pretty good show and I did enjoy it.
I rode the bike back to the West End and then back to the Katy trail head and went
home. The odometer read 24 miles. A Little sunburned but I had a fantastic time
today. The electric bike gives you the freedom to do stuff like this all the time. It's
great!
